چکیده

We study a dispersive counterpart of the classical gas dynamics problem of the interaction of a shock wave with a counter-propagating simple rarefaction wave often referred to as the shock wave refraction. The dispersive shock wave (DSW) refraction due to its head-on collision with the centred rarefaction wave (RW) is considered in the frameworks of the one-dimensional defocusing nonlinear Schrödinger (NLS) equations with cubic as well as with saturable nonlinearity. For the integrable cubic nonlinearity case we present a full asymptotic description of the DSW refraction by constructing appropriate exact solutions of the Whitham modulation equations in Riemann invariants. For the NLS equation with saturable nonlinearity, whose modulation system does not possess Riemann invariants, we take advantage of the recently developed method for the DSW description in non-integrable dispersive systems to obtain key parameters of the DSW refraction. Our modulation theory analytical results are supported by direct numerical simulations of the corresponding full dispersive initial-value problem.

Observation of Dispersive Shock Waves, Solitons, and Their Interactions in Viscous Fluid Conduits.

Dispersive shock waves and solitons are fundamental nonlinear excitations in dispersive media, but dispersive shock wave studies to date have been severely constrained. Here, we report on a novel dispersive hydrodynamic test bed: the effectively frictionless dynamics of interfacial waves between two high viscosity contrast, miscible, low Reynolds number Stokes fluids. This scenario is realized ...

Metastability and Dispersive Shock Waves in Fermi-pasta-ulam System

We show the relevance of the dispersive analogue of the shock waves in the FPU dynamics. In particular we give strict numerical evidences that metastable states emerging from low frequency initial excitations, are indeed constituted by dispersive shock waves travelling through the chain. Relevant characteristics of the metastable states, such as their frequency extension and their time scale of...

Dispersive shock waves with nonlocal nonlinearity.

We consider dispersive optical shock waves in nonlocal nonlinear media. Experiments are performed using spatial beams in a thermal liquid cell, and results agree with a hydrodynamic theory of propagation.

Wave Reflection and Refraction at the Interface of Triclinic and Liquid Medium

A Mathematical model has been considered to study the reflection and refraction phenomenon of plane wave at the interface of an isotropic liquid medium and a triclinic (anisotropic) half-space. The incident plane qP wave generates three types of reflected waves namely quasi-P (qP), quasi-SV (qSV) and quasi-SH (qSH) waves in the tric...

Bifurcation diagram of a one-parameter family of dispersive waves

The Korteweg de Vries (KdV) equation with small dispersion is a model for the formation and propagation of dispersive shock waves in one dimension. Dispersive shock waves in KdV are characterized by the appearance of zones of rapid modulated oscillations in the solution of the Cauchy problem with smooth initial data. The modulation in time and space of the amplitudes, the frequencies and the wa...
